Fractional CO2 laser (eCO2™)

Modern procedure for skin improvement and skin renewal

Help for skin regeneration

The skin is not only our largest organ, but also a true miracle of nature. Until old age, it is capable of renewing itself. This takes an average of 28 days. With increasing age, however, the skin finds it more difficult to regenerate and the cell renewal process slows down. It can still repair itself, but not as quickly, easily and qualitatively as it used to. In addition, the body produces less structure-giving collagen. The result is visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, loss of elasticity, age spots or large-pored skin. With the fractional CO2 laser (eCO2™), we can support your skin in its regeneration, optimize its appearance, renew and refresh it in our private practice for dermatology and aesthetics in Munich.

Skin renewal: this is how the natural process works

The skin can do much more than you might think: it protects you from external influences such as heat, cold and UV radiation. It can also ward off scratches and bumps. The skin has a high acid content, which makes it difficult for viruses, bacteria and fungi to penetrate the body through the skin.

Repair, regeneration and renewal: these are the important properties that the individual skin layers additionally possess. Unlike many other cells in the body, skin cells divide throughout their lives so that the skin layer can be regularly renewed. For this purpose, the lower area of the epidermis constantly forms new basal cells. They are pushed upwards. This causes the existing skin cells to detach, dry out and become the upper horny layer. Every day, the skin sheds up to 14 grams of these dead horny cells. This process of skin renewal is basically very fast. Within about four weeks, the skin on the entire body has completely renewed itself once.

But with increasing age, the body can no longer maintain this speed. In addition, the supply of moisture also decreases and typical signs of aging appear.

The fractional CO2 laser (eCO2™) helps the skin to regenerate

Various fractional laser treatments stimulate the healing process and encourage the skin to produce fresh, firming collagen. The treated skin cells are shed (ablative fractional lasers) or “invisible” (non-ablative fractional lasers) to make way for new skin cells that form as a result of the healing process.

Fractional CO2 lasers are among the most advanced methods of skin treatment. Here, the energy is applied selectively and not to the entire skin surface, as is the case with other laser procedures. This means that we apply hundreds of microscopic heat columns to individual areas of your skin. In between, islands of untreated skin remain. Your body now forms new collagen and elastic fibers on its own, fresh, new, well-structured tissue. This is how it wants to close the tiny injuries again.

The result: your entire skin appearance is refined, refreshed, rejuvenated, tightened and smoothed. After just a few days, you can already notice the first positive changes in your skin appearance and structure. The full effect develops over several months. The first impression is thus followed by a natural, continuous improvement of your skin.

Fractional co2 laser (eCO2™): refined skin appearance through fractional ablative laser treatment.

A fractional CO2 laser (eCO2™) is ideally suited for a detailed skin surface renewal, the so-called skin resurfacing. We use the laser to remove the superficial layers of skin in individual areas. At the same time, we heat the surrounding tissue, which results in significant tightening. After the treatment wrinkles are reduced. At the same time, we can treat acne scars and scars, pigment changes, light damage to the skin or even large pores with the CO2 laser.

The first results – such as reduced wrinkle depth and firmer skin around the eyes – are already visible after crusts have fallen off. This is true even if your skin is still red and your face may also be somewhat swollen. The maximum individual lifting and tightening effect can also take three to six or even twelve months due to the individual differences in the formation of new collagen and elastin. This is how long your body needs to complete the natural wound healing process.

In most cases, we can achieve the desired result with a single treatment. If your skin is severely damaged by the sun (so-called “dermis”), if your wrinkles are very deep or if acne scars are particularly pronounced, two or, more rarely, three treatments may be necessary. These are then carried out after three to six months.

With fractional CO2 laser (eCO2™) treatment, you should expect seven to ten days of downtime. During the first two to three days, you may experience a weeping superficial abrasion with swelling. On days four to five, rather dry superficial crusts usually form, which fall off from about the sixth or seventh day after treatment with the fractional laser. Underneath, you can already see the new rosy, still somewhat reddened skin.

The redness can last up to three weeks. However, if you wish, you can cover them with make-up so that you can go about your normal professional, social and private life.

You should protect the new skin from strong sun exposure for the next three to six months. We recommend that you always apply an appropriate SPF 50+ sunscreen to your skin.

In the course of fractional CO2 laser (eCO2™) treatment, we remove the superficial layers of the skin by means of laser energy absorbed in the water of the skin. This creates a superficial wound. This process would be quite painful in itself. However, in order for you to tolerate the treatment well, you will be given pain-relieving medication and an anesthetic cream one hour beforehand. In addition, throughout the treatment, we cool your skin surface with a special device that can cool your skin surface down to -30°C. For particularly sensitive areas such as around the mouth or eyes, we also use local anesthesia.

After the treatment, you will usually have no or only mild pain and feelings of tightness. By the next day at the latest, there may be significant swelling and a superficial weeping wound area in the treated area.

If you want to have the mouth area treated, you must start taking herpes prophylaxis tablets two days before the treatment. From day one, treat the skin with disinfecting compresses, antibiotic cream, and from day five, additionally with a moisturizer that promotes wound healing.

During the ablative laser procedure, we remove the superficial layers of the skin. This creates a minimal wound that starts a great process: The production of collagen and new elastic fibers is stimulated. The fact that we remove the superficial layer of skin also reduces any pigmentary shifts or even acne scars. Depending on the depth of the ablation, you should expect a downtime of about one week to ten days for the ablative laser procedure. Very good effects can be achieved with just one treatment. The procedure is suitable for skin types I to III, sometimes also IV.

We use the ablative CO2 laser to treat moderate to deeper wrinkles, sagging skin, aging skin, age spots or even superficial acne scars. Furthermore, it is helpful in cases of elastosis, a degeneration of the collagen connective tissue.

When we treat your skin with the non-ablative laser method, the surface remains intact. Since the laser beams penetrate your top layer of skin down to the dermis without damaging it, there is no ablation of your skin. Non-ablative laser treatment creates individual pinprick-like micro-injuries under your skin. The surrounding tissue is stimulated to heal the small injuries. As this happens, new cells and fresh collagen form. Your body removes the destroyed cells. There are no obvious “wounds” visible after the treatment, which is why you can usually go about your normal daily life immediately. Depending on the laser used and your individual conditions, you should expect three to six treatments at intervals of two to four weeks.

We use the 1540nm Erbium Glass laser as an ICON attachment as well as the 1927nm Thullium laser (LaseMD™) for the treatments. The procedure is suitable for all skin types and tightens slightly sagging skin. With the non-ablative laser treatment we can refine your pores and refresh the overall skin appearance. The therapy allows for tightening of slightly sagging skin and helps to make deeper acne scars and stretch marks/stretch marks unrecognizable. We can also use it to treat melasma (hyperpigmentation) and dyschromia (change in skin color due to storage of pigments other than melanin).
