Facelift Tapes: Can wrinkles really be taped away?

They are particularly eye-catching on Instagram at the moment: Facelift Tapes, which are supposed to help reduce wrinkles quickly and easily. They are actually no strangers to facial treatments, having been used by makeup artists and drag queens for many years. In addition, the tapes are part of the standard inventory on fashion shows and film sets. But are they also suitable for normal home use? We get to the bottom of it.

What are facelift tapes?

You have certainly heard of taping. Functional tape dressings or kinesiological tapes are used in sports medicine, orthopedics and trauma surgery to tighten and strengthen certain body structures. In this way, they obtain more stability. Typical applications include injuries to muscles, ligaments or joints.

Mark Traynor – a make-up artist and hair stylist – had the idea to apply the tapes to the face in 1969. He invented an elastic band, to both ends of which he attached tape tabs. Traynor’s idea revolutionized the beauty world. Without his invention, transformative and rejuvenating beauty looks would be unthinkable today.

Many manufacturers have taken this idea and further developed Facelift Tapes. They advertise that customers can use them to achieve a younger and firmer look for a few hours. Wrinkles and crow’s feet can be reduced and cheekbones are better emphasized.

Application of the facelift tapes

First, remove the hair from the face and fix it at the back of the head. Before you apply the facelift tapes, you should – for a good hold – clean your face with an oil-free cleanser. After that, stick the tapes on your temples and around the eye area. Make sure to apply them very close to your hairline. Push up the excess skin and press the tape firmly. Now connect the elastic bands together at the back of your head. Now style your hair so that it covers the tapes as best as possible. For the perfect illusion of a lift, conceal the tapes with make-up.

Facelift tapes: these are the advantages and disadvantages

Facelift tapes have clear advantages: they can reduce crow’s feet around the eyes, emphasize cheekbones and give the visual impression of a lifted face. Compared to a surgical procedure, they are significantly less expensive. You can even buy them online. Moreover, they are not only suitable for the face, but you can also use them to tighten your neck for a few hours.

And that’s where we come to the other side of the coin: face lifting is only short-term – for long-term results, other measures are necessary. Besides, the application is not easy, it takes a lot of practice to place the facelift tapes so that the look does not look artificial. Often they are not as invisible as you would like them to be, even after makeup is applied over them. In addition, allergic reactions may occur.

Facelift tapes have only a temporary effect – but ultherapy has a permanent effect
