Trends in cosmetic surgery: minimally invasive procedures

Trends der Schönheitschirurgie

Recently, the DGÄPC, the Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, conducted its annual survey and thus determined the trends in cosmetic surgery in 2018 from the patient’s point of view. It became clear that the trend – especially among women – is clearly toward minimally invasive procedures.

Small changes are “in”

Therapies, for example, for wrinkle treatment entirely without surgery are becoming more and more popular. In figures, this means that the proportion of non-surgical procedures has risen from 30.8 to 44.4 percent compared to 2017. That’s about 15 percent.

And these are the most popular treatments:
hyaluronic acid wrinkle injections

According to the patient survey, wrinkle injections with fillers rank first. And not by chance: the active ingredient occurs naturally in the body and is responsible, among other things, for giving the skin tone, volume and elasticity. Over the years, the natural production of hyaluronic acid in the body decreases, the tissue gradually becomes slacker and sags. Wrinkles appear. With the targeted injection of hyaluronic acid, these signs of aging can be reduced or even made invisible. How does it work? The filler reaches the deep layers of the skin, where it unfolds its plumping or volume-reducing effect. Hyaluronic acid can be used to treat naso-labial folds, small wrinkles around the mouth, sunken tissue, forehead wrinkles and creases on the décolleté.

By the way, hyaluronic acid can do even more:

Thanks to it, it is possible to make the lip contour more prominent and thus increase the volume of the lip for a full kissing mouth. Furthermore, the active ingredient can be used to gently correct the nose in case of inequalities, dents and bone edges. You can learn more about the topic here: “What can hyaluronic acid do?”

Wrinkle injection with btx

In second place among the most popular minimally invasive treatments is wrinkle treatment with BTX. It is considered an efficient and inexpensive method for smoothing wrinkles on the face. BTX is a “nerve toxin” that interrupts the transmission of excitation from nerve cells to muscles. At the injected areas, the contraction of the muscle is inhibited. The respective muscles relax and the corresponding wrinkles are smoothed. The injection of BTX is suitable for mimic wrinkles such as forehead wrinkles/ frown lines, eye wrinkles/crows feet or nose wrinkles/bunny lines.

Like hyaluronic acid, BTX can do more than just smooth wrinkles: The active ingredient can effectively combat excessive sweating. As part of a hyperhidrosis treatment, BTX can make sweat production “go away.”

Device-based therapies for skin tightening

For those who are afraid of needles and injections and do not want to undergo surgical or minimally invasive skin tightening treatments, but still want to alleviate their wrinkles, our device-based therapies such as Radiesse, Ultherapy, Lasemd, fractional lasers or Attiva are an alternative.

Other results of the survey

The survey also showed that classic procedures such as liposuction are still very popular. It is used in case of unfavorable fat distribution on the body, which both diet and exercise cannot solve. An unharmonious silhouette remains, fat pads like to stand out unfavorably under clothes.

If you are also affected, but shy away from the surgical procedure of liposuction, we have alternative treatment options within the framework of body contouring: radiofrequency therapy enCurve, radiofrequency therapy Attiva and radio/ultrasound treatment BTL Exilis EliteTM. Fat-away injection/injection lipolysis and Cellfina are based on a minimally invasive approach.

Patients pay attention to physician training

In contrast to earlier surveys, which tended to focus on low prices for beauty treatments, respondents are increasingly focusing on the doctor’s knowledge and experience, specialist training, good ratings or reputation, and expert status. Comprehensive advice is more important to patients today than ever before – because they want to be well informed about what is happening to their bodies.

Fall and winter as the most popular treatment period

The cooler season is described in the patient survey as the preferred treatment period. 16.6 percent of participants prioritize November, while 13.9 percent prioritize December. October ranked third as the most popular treatment month with 13.4 percent of the vote.

That’s good, because the cooler treatment months offer many advantages. Find out what they are here: “3 beauty treatments for winter”.
